Cervical Cancer Diagnostic Camp – Under Collaboration with SEWA Ahmedabad
14th December 2021
“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller
As a part of our initiative to propagate preventive healthcare and empower women through education, a Cervical Cancer Diagnostic Camp was conducted on 14th December 2021 at Behrampura, Ahmedabad, in association with the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA).
The campaign, with the slogan “Raho Cancer Se Do Kadam Aage”, focused on creating awareness, promoting early detection, and timely referral for cervical cancer among the underprivileged masses.
Objectives of the Camp
•     To inform women about cervical cancer, its causative factors, signs, and prevention.
•     to offer free Pap smear screening for early diagnosis.
•     to detect suspected cases for further diagnostic check-up and treatment.
•     to refer high-risk patients to special healthcare units.
Key Observations
•     Limited Awareness: Few women possessed little knowledge regarding cervical cancer and its symptoms.
      •     Common Health Concerns: Abnormal discharge, pelvic discomfort, and irregular menstruation were common complaints.
      •     Social Barriers: Stigma and apprehension related to cancer caused delay in seeking screening.
      •     Action Taken: All the suspected cases were referred for higher-level investigations, such as colposcopy and biopsy, to expedite medical intervention.
Why This Initiative Matters
Early diagnosis of cervical cancer greatly enhances treatment. Yet, in rural areas and slum populations, healthcare education, awareness, and accessibility issues generally lead to late diagnosis. By carrying out this pilot project in Behrampura with the help of SEWA, we could cover women who are most at risk and make a positive impact on their health journey.
Fostering preventive health behaviour, inducing lifestyle changes, and minimizing stigma are important actions in the battle against cancer.
Let’s unite in the battle against cervical cancer by creating awareness and providing every woman with timely screening and treatment.
